Que s’est-il passé à Washington ? Paul Harris, du Guardian, résume, ce 5 mai 2011, l’extraordinaire évolution de l’opération d’élimination de ben Laden… Comment une opération préparée dans le plus grand secret, avec minutie et maîtrise, réalisée à la satisfaction de ses initiateurs, présentée et détaillée par un président extraordinairement maître de lui, – comment ce triomphe se transforme en déroute. On a déjà vu le cas, mais, ici, le détail des circonstances mérite d’être donné, pour faire mesurer l’étonnante confusion qui s’est brutalement abattue sur la Maison Blanche.

Washington est stupéfait, observe Harris. Depuis le discours d’Obama annonçant la mort de ben Laden, la Maison-Blanche, le président, son porte-parole, ont accompli un parcours de cauchemar, réalisant une déroute en matière de relations publiques. On dirait ainsi que le domaine du système du technologisme a été parfaitement satisfait (triomphe), et que celui du système de la communication a tourné au cauchemar (déroute) ; dans une occasion aussi grave, d’une façon extrêmement claire, sans doute peut-on distinguer parfaitement la marque psychologique du président Obama, avec ses qualités exceptionnelles et les défauts tout aussi grands de ces qualités, qui conduisent d’une maîtrise et d’un calme exemplaires dans l’action, une fois l’action décidée (technologisme), à l’hésitation, l’absence de fermeté et une certaine paresse de la décision, l’improvisation forcée dans tous les sens que cela implique (communication)… Lequel de ces deux événements est le plus importante ? Dans le régime qu’impose le Système, on est évidemment conduit à observer que l’essentiel c’est la perception. On devine de quelle côté pencherait la gravité du jugement…

Après avoir rappelé le triomphe, Harris décrit donc la déroute.

»First, Bin Laden's house was said to be worth a million dollars, but local real estate experts valued it at $250,000.

»Officials argue they have made mistakes because they attempted to get facts quickly into the public domain from what was, no doubt, a confused “fog of war”. That's a good reason for the mess. But it is no excuse for it.

»What happened to the calm and level heads of last weekend? It you don't know the full facts, then don't release any of them. That is basic PR stuff. […]

»To add to this mess has been the foolish to-and-fro over the release of death pictures of Bin Laden. First, it seemed the White House would release a photograph of Bin Laden's corpse. Then, it backtracked a day later, saying it would not. President Obama has given an interview saying no photograph will be published, but at this rate, the White House will probably change their mind again around this time next week…»
