NATO Happy With France’s Current Role in Alliance
By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, BRUSSELS

NATO affirmed Sept. 12 that it is happy with France’s role within the alliance even though it is not fully integrated into the organization’s military structure.
“France is a country that contributes a lot, is often among the countries that contribute the most, and that also means to our military operations,” NATO spokesman James Appathurai told reporters in Brussels.
“No one can say to us that France is not contributing a lot to NATO.”
French President Nicolas Sarkozy said last month he would shortly take “very strong” initiatives to build up European defense and renew the NATO military alliance, while giving France “its full place” in the organization.
Some experts believe Sarkozy could soon move to end a 41-year French boycott of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s integrated military command.
“It’s up to France to decide if it will formally integrate into the military structure,” Appathurai said.
“It would of course be welcomed by NATO, but I underline that things are working fine at the moment.”
France took part in NATO deployments to the Balkans in the 1990s and is part of the NATO-led security force in Afghanistan. It also helped with NATO disaster relief work following the earthquake in Pakistan two years ago.
