“Vous voulez que je parte en guerre contre la Russie ?”

Le site Middle East Eye (MEE) a reçu (voir le 7 février) les confidences de “travailleurs humanitaires” lié à l’opposition dite “modérée” en Syrie, lesquels avaient eux-mêmes reçu les confidences du secrétaire d’État John Kerry, un peu exaspéré semble-t-il, lors d’une réception donnée jeudi dernier en marge d’une conférence à Londres de “donateurs” favorables à l’opposition anti-Assad. L’échange a eu lieu quelques heures après l’échec des pourparlers de paix à Genève, après que certains participants de l’opposition aient quitté ces pourparlers.

Effectivement, Kerry semblait exaspéré, rejetant sur les groupes d’opposition la responsabilité de l’échec des pourparlers et l’impasse qui s’ensuit, qui est surtout une impasse pour cette opposition. D’après les déclarations de Kerry et dans la mesure où l’on peut admettre que Kerry parle au nom des USA (cela n’est vrai qu’en partie, en raison de l’éclatement du pouvoir), les USA estiment qu’il n’y a plus qu’une perspective : le quasi-anéantissement des structures des groupes rebelles par la campagne conduite actuellement sur le champ de bataille par les Syriens, les Iraniens et les Russes, moyennant quoi il ne sera plus nécessaire alors e songer à des pourparlers de paix (ce que ZeroHedge.com traduit par ceci : « [I]f Russia and Iran wipe out the opposition on the battlefield, there’s no need for peace talks. The Assad government will have been restored and that will be that. »)

La seule alternative possible, toujours selon Kerry-exaspéré, ce serait une intervention des USA, c’est-à-dire une guerre entre les USA et la Russie, évoquée sur le ton qu'on imagine (« What do you want me to do? Go to war with Russia? Is that what you want? »). Kerry n’a évoqué ni la Turquie, ni l’Arabie saoudite, ni la myriade de promesses d’intervention “contre les terroristes de Daesh“ (en réalité contre Assad) entendues ces derniers jours. Cet aparté semble ainsi ramener le problème de la crise syrienne à ses données les plus précises, et notamment et essentiellement à la volonté US d'éviter toute possibilité d'un conflit avec la Russie. C'est une évidence de bon sens, mais encore fallait-il qu'elle soit dite sur le ton de l'exaspération.

During a conversation on the sidelines of this week’s Syria donor conference in London, sources say Kerry blamed the Syrian opposition for leaving the talks and paving the way for a joint offensive by the Syrian government and Russia on Aleppo. “‘He said, ‘Don’t blame me – go and blame your opposition,’” one of the aid workers, who asked to remain anonymous to protect her organisation, told Middle East Eye.

» Two Syrian aid workers said they approached Kerry at a donor conference drinks reception and told him that he had not done enough to protect Syrian civilians. He then said they should blame the opposition. “He said that basically, it was the opposition that didn’t want to negotiate and didn’t want a ceasefire, and they walked away,” the second of the aid workers told MEE in a separate conversation and also on the basis of anonymity. “‘What do you want me to do? Go to war with Russia? Is that what you want?’” the aid worker said Kerry told her.

» Both aid workers said Kerry told them that he anticipated three months of bombing during which time “the opposition will be decimated”.  The second aid worker said the most that Kerry seemed prepared to offer were aid drops for besieged Syrian towns which he said he had discussed with Russia. “He said they were close and they were talking to the Russians about it,” she said.

» A third MEE source who claims to have served as a liaison between the Syrian and American governments over the past six months said Kerry had passed the message on to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in October that the US did not want him to be removed. Instead, the source claims, Kerry insisted that Assad should stop using barrel bombs, which terrify civilian populations. The source claimed that Kerry said if Assad stopped the barrel bombs, Kerry could “sell the story” to the public, the source said. Assad reportedly responded to Kerry that in exchange the US needed to “stop backing the rebels,” the source said. »
